Review: An Example Thing, Rated
A placeholder verdict on a made-up object. Nothing here refers to a real book, film, product, or place.
The thing under review does not exist. Call it the Sample Object, edition zero: a prop with a cover, a running time of none, and no author. The score below is a sample score so the stars have something to do.
Four out of five is not a judgment of anyone’s work. It is a number parked in the frontmatter so the review can show stars. Change it when you are writing about something real, and say what the number means.
What the Sample Object gets right, in this fiction, is that it is obviously fake. The title says “example.” The dek says “made-up.” A reader should not be able to mistake it for a product they can buy or a book they can order.
What it misses is everything a real review needs: a specific scene, a sentence worth quoting from the work itself, a reason to spend the time. There is no work, so there is no sentence. See also the sample short take if you want the shorter form of the same idea.
Replace this file rather than editing the fiction into something that sounds reported. A review should be about a thing that exists.
